Tiered Metal Kitchen Cart Makeover

Isn’t this a gem? Maybe not yet, but it does have great potential. Yes, I saw this cart’s future, and it was good. Except for the rust and dirt, the cart was in good shape and has two handles, one on each side–that’s a plus. Let’s see what a little scrubbing, painting and stenciling can do!

After a good cleaning, the cart was ready to paint. Although I did not take in-process photos, just know that I disassembled the trays from the legs. I spray painted the legs white, and painted the trays in light green, almost sage.

When the paint had completely dried, I reassembled the cart. You can see in the photos that I distressed the handles. However, distressing doesn’t work on the newly painted cart, so some day I will touch them up.

To embellish the top tray, I chose a beautiful lemon image from The Graphics Fairy. I printed it using the freezer paper method to create a color transfer. I like the pop of yellow and dark green colors against the sage background.

The tiered cart is now ready for its debut. It makes a beautiful and practical serving cart for a backyard soiree.

And the handles are the perfect place to hang a tea towel.

Next time you spot one of these vintage carts at a flea market, thrift store or yard sale, don’t pass it by. Look at its potential and make it your own!

  4. Just beautiful! I need one and I don’t have far to go to find one. My mother has been using this EXACT same cart behind her couch (covered with a tablecloth) to display things. She might need to find a new display table… Thanks for linking up to #2usestuesday
