Find Those Potatoes or my Vegetable Bin Makeover

Potatoes enjoy being stored in a dry, dark place. But they are also easily forgotten until you later find them in the back of the pantry growing the latest science experiment.

When I spotted this really old vegetable bin, I quickly grabbed slowly lugged it back to the car. It became my next makeover.

The inside metal container is not salvageable as it is completely rusted away at the bottom.

After a more-than-thorough cleaning, I painted the cabinet using ASCP Versailles. This is the first time I’ve used this color —  it’s a light, creamy beige with a hint of green. It’s also the first time I’ve used the Paint-EZE containers! I don’t know why I waited so long to buy these. No more rusty paint cans. [This is not a paid endorsement, just a great product I want to share with you.]

I removed the hardware, which turned out to be brass. So I soaked the pieces in a mixture of white vinegar and water to remove the rust and tarnish.

I painted the trim and the tabletop with a mix of 3/4 Old White and 1/4 Versailles. It creates a nice contrast and accentuates the trim. Then the entire piece was waxed with ASCP clear wax. It’s tempting to distress this or put a black wax over it. For now, I’ll leave it as is.

This bin would also make a great gardening box to keep potting soil in. Which is what I thought after choosing this lovely vintage sunflower printable from The Graphics Fairy. I printed it out on card stock, cut it to size and adhered it with an outdoor formula decoupage. Also note the shiny brass handle on the cabinet.

My family wonders why I hoard collect so many chachkes. Here’s the reason: I bought this rustic metal watering can as part of a tiny wind chime in a little craft store in a small town, probably about 17 years ago. Never made the wind chime. However, it’s the perfect piece to embellish the top of the shelf!

Here is the finished vegetable bin. The bookshelf is obviously a good place to keep cookbooks handy.

This piece also has wheels so you can easily move it from indoors to outside when you decide to put your potatoes back into the pantry.

I love the transformation on this bin. Now the only decision left to make is do I use it as a vegetable bin or gardening container?
